TEHRAN (IQNA) – A ceremony was organized in Karbala, Iraq, to honor those taking part in a Quranic plan held during the Arbaeen procession back in October.

Quranic plan in Iraq

The ceremony was attended by a number of Iraqi religious officials and figures, including Salih al-Dareiei, secretary general of the Union of Iraq’s Quranic Societies and Gatherings, Qafqn.org website reported.

Also present was prominent Iraqi qari Rasoul al-Wazni.

It included a speech by al-Dareiei and recitations of the Quran by al-Wazni and other qaris.

The plan featured teaching the correct way of reading Surah al-Fatiha, the first surah of the Quran, to Arbaeen pilgrims.

Arbaeen, which is one of the largest religious gatherings in the world, comes 40 days after Ashura, the martyrdom anniversary of the third Shia Imam, Imam Hussain (AS).

Each year, a huge crowd of Shias flocks to the Iraqi city of Karbala, where the holy shrine of Imam Hussain (AS) is located, to perform mourning rites.

Iraqi officials estimate that more than 16 million pilgrims took part in the Arbaeen procession this year.
